Situated on a group of islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the Archipelago Fleet. Work on the fortress was begun in the mid-18th century. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Finland’s most popular tourist attractions. Suomenlinna is also a district of the city of Helsinki, with a permanent population of more than 800.
You should wear good, comfortable shoes because the streets in the fortress are cobblestoned and distances between the sights may seem long if you are wearing high heels or thin-soled sandals.
If you wish, you can stay on the island after the guided tour. There is a lot to see and do. You can swim, watch the beautiful landscape, shop unique presents made by Suomenlinna craft designers and enjoy the restaurants or cafés, many of them have sunny terraces. Return on your own: Ferry departs from the main quay on Iso Mustasaari island. The ferry is part of the Helsinki city transport system, so you can use the ticket provided to you by the conference.
Option 3: Football and sauna
The event will be organized provided that a minimum of 20 participants register.
Cost: 30 €
The cost covers the field, referee, sauna and evening snack.
North vs. South football match (duration approx. 2 hours)
Football is a global language, just like physics. After staying indoors for two and a half days, listening and talking physics, you might feel the need to get some physical exercise. Join the North vs. South football match, or just come and cheer your team. The football pitch is located right next to the conference centre.
Please remember to bring your own football boots and any other gear you may need to be able to play.
Sauna and snacks (duration approx. 2 hours)
Sauna is something quintessentially Finnish, and what would be a better way to wash away mud, sweat, and tears and discuss the highlights of the game than going to a sauna with your teammates, opponents, and fans. The sauna is located just a few minutes' walk from the football pitch, and there's also the possibility to go swimming in the sea. Typical sauna-related refreshments will be served (incl. beer and sausages).
Please bring your own towel (and swimsuit).
